Hi, I’m Tom! This blog is a place for stories, questions, and simple tools to help you grow and have better conversations. I started the Lost Art of Random Conversations to help people put down their phones, talk face-to-face, and have more fun and confidence doing it. I’m still learning, just like you, and I love sharing what I discover along the way.
People don’t talk to each other the way they used to.
You might be thinking, “Tom, you’re only 31. Do you really know what it ‘used to’ be like?”
Fair enough.
But even in my lifetime, I’ve seen a big shift. We went from spending free time face-to-face—playing outside, chatting with neighbors—to spending countless hours on screens, lost in the virtual world.
It’s easy to feel alone—and hard to know how to start a real conversation.
Loneliness, division, and mental health struggles are everywhere.
When the world feels heavy, I try to get curious.
To focus on what I can do—not just everything that I can’t.
This is where the Lost Art of Random Conversations (LARC) was born.
The Lost Art of Random Conversations
LARC is a movement to bring people back together—face-to-face.
It’s a reminder of the power of talking to strangers.
It’s a live event, where you show up, connect, and leave feeling more confident and hopeful than when you arrived.
It’s a social media movement, nudging people off their phones and into real conversations.
It’s a book—something beautifully simple and profound you can carry on planes, trains, and automobiles.
Full of questions to spark a moment with the person next to you.
It’s that tiny moment in the grocery store line, when you slow down enough to ask the stranger behind the counter an honest question.
In a time of disconnection and endless scrolling, LARC is a reminder that random, meaningful conversations still matter.
I believe:
One question can change a day.
One moment of presence can shift a life.
One gathering can ripple through a community.
